Paiute Trail
Paiute's main trail is 275 miles long, with over 1000 miles of marked side trails and 1500+ estimated miles of side forest roads and trails. Due to its vast size, the Paiute ATV Trail is best explored in segments.
The Old Spanish Trail
Trails are being marked and efforts are underway to interpret the story of this commercial “highway”. Interpretive displays have been placed at Red Creek near the Ivie Creek Rest Stop on I-70, the nearby mouth of Red Creek, off of SR-25 in the Johnson Valley area, at the Doctor Creek Trailhead, the SR-24 Rest Stop by the Koosharem short cut, and at the Paiute ATV Trailhead in Kingston Canyon.
At these points visitors will be able to read about John C. Charles Fremont, Capt. John Gunnison, Kit Carson, Lt. George Brewerton and the Ute Chief, Walkara. Silhouette, life-sized pack trains can be found at the Johnson Valley and Doctor Creek interpretive panels.
Local History
Koosharem is a town in Sevier County, Utah, United States. Koosharem is also known as "Grass Valley". It generally comprises the area known as Burrville, Utah on the north, south through the valley and through the town of Koosharem and down to the south end with the town of Greenwich, Utah. The valley is made up of private lands nestled within the Fishlake National Forest. Koosharem is situated at the cross-roads for travelers going between Capitol Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park and/or Zion's National Park. Koosharem is also the closest town to the famous Fish Lake. The town also serves as an important point along the many trails of the Paiute ATV Trail System.
Koosharem's only store, the historic Grass Valley Mercantile, shares this secondary naming reference.
The name of the town Koosharem originates from the Native Americans indigenous to the area, the Piute Indians and their term for the valley named for the deep red clover that grows in the lush meadows of the Koosharem Valley,. The population was 336 at the 2020 census.
We are a 35 minute drive to Richfield, 25 minutes to Loa, 20 Minutes to Fishlake and 25 minutes to Ottercreek. We are surrounded by Hunting, Fishing, Camping and Paiute ATV Trails.
